Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the structural and performance feasibility of replacing conventional steel reinforcement with glass fiber-reinforced polymer(GFRP) bars in highway bridge rigid safety barriers(SB5-B grade) to address continuous durability degradation caused by chloride- induced corrosion. Method: The research reviewed domestic and international design standards, developed a cross-sectional design by evaluating bending performance and shear capacity, and conducted vehicle collision simulations with five representative cross-sections alongside full-scale crash tests. Result: While the proposed GFRP-reinforced section demonstrated sufficient resistance capacity against design collision loads, the full-scale crash tests revealed that the occupant protection performance requirement was not satisfied because the THIV value exceeded the acceptance limit. Conclusion: This study verified the technical feasibility of GFRP application as a practical alternative for improving the durability of facilities vulnerable to chloride deterioration, and more refined evaluations and crash tests for separated median barriers will be conducted in the follow-up study.
