Abstract
Purpose: This study reexamines the existing service life standards for fire apparatus established in 2010 and proposes revised service life criteria that reflect current automotive manufacturing technologies and regional characteristics in Korea as of 2025. The study analyzes driving distance, operating hours, and other operational data obtained from vehicle event data recorders. An empirical sample survey was conducted by classifying regions according to their characteristics into urban, rural, and coastal areas. Method: We selected eight metropolitan/provincial fire headquarters Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, Incheon, Chungcheongnamdo, Chungcheongbukdo, Gyeongsangbukdo, and Gangwondo and analyzed vehicle operation data obtained from the onboard vehicle data recorders managed by fire stations in each region, including travel distance, engine operating time, and vehicle-related information. The data were extracted and processed using data conversion systems such as e-TAS. In addition, a quantitative analysis was conducted for all 18 metropolitan/provincial fire headquarters by dividing the total population and total number of fire vehicles by the area of each jurisdiction. Result and Conclusion: Seoul is classified as Grade 1, representing the most demanding operating conditions. Grade 2 includes Busan, Incheon, Gwangju, and Daejeon; Grade 3 includes Daegu, Gyeonggi, Changwon, Ulsan, and Sejong; and Grade 4 comprises the remaining regions, namely Jeju, Chungnam, Gyeongnam, Chungbuk, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, and Gangwon. Accordingly, differential service-life weighting factors are proposed for each regional group to reflect the varying operating conditions of fire-fighting vehicles.
