Abstract
Purpose: This study develops a hybrid mechanical splice (PC Joint) that secures both stress continuity and erection-eccentricity tolerance at segmental joints of precast concrete members, and verifies its static structural performance. Method: Eight full-scale monolithic and segmental beams in two series (600×300×4,200mm and 600×400×6,500mm) were tested under four-point flexure, flexure-shear and pure shear. Result: The segmental specimens carried 1.0-7.1% higher peak loads than the monolithic ones, but their tensile reinforcement ratio was also 21-31% higher. On a normalized basis, their overstrength ratio was 1.40-1.68 against 1.52-1.85 for the monolithic specimens, about 7-10% lower. In pure shear the segmental specimen was 8.2% weaker, yet its strength reached 2.8 times the interface shear-transfer capacity given by the shear-friction provisions, with no sliding failure along the joint. Conclusion: Given this reinforcement difference, the higher peak loads cannot be attributed to the joint. The proposed splice does not enhance flexural capacity but keeps the joint-induced performance loss small relative to the design safety margin, so that segmental members behave comparably to monolithic ones in flexure and shear under static monotonic loading.
