Purpose: This study analyzed laboratory chemical accidents in Korea over the past 10 years by institution type to support tailored prevention measures. Method: A total of 84 accidents were classified by institution type and reclassified by accident type, cause, equipment/facility, and work activity. Result: Laboratory accidents accounted for 9.4% of all chemical accidents and 14.4% of all casualties. Spill/leak and contact accidents were common in primary and secondary schools and universities, whereas fires and explosions were more frequent in corporatee research institutes. Non-compliance with safety procedures was the leading cause across all institution types, while natural disasters had a greater impact in primary and secondary schools. Storage-related work/facilities were predominant in primary and secondary schools, whereas experimental facilities/processes were predominant in universities and corporatee research institutes. Conclusion: Vulnerability factors differed by institution type, indicating the need for differentiated prevention strategies.
