Purpose: This study aims to verify the factor structure and validity of an Emotional Safety (Intelligence) scale tailored for construction site workers and to comparatively evaluate the applicability of measurement tools optimized for industrial settings. Method: For this purpose, a 16-item short-form scale based on Mayer’s ability-based theory and Schutte’s 33-item self-report scale (SSEIT) were selected as research instruments. Based on data collected from construction workers, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed to verify structural fitness and discriminant validity. Results: The analysis revealed that the Mayer-based short-form scale exhibited a distinct four-factor structure comprising ‘understanding, utilization, regulation, and perception.’ Furthermore, it demonstrated superior statistical fit (KMO = .901, explanatory power = 65.37%) and model parsimony compared to the Schutte scale (KMO = .881, explanatory power = 65.08%). Notably, the Mayer-based scale showed high stability, with its theoretical framework consistently maintained within the field data. Conclusion: In summary, the Mayer-based short-form scale, which focuses on ‘action-oriented information processing capability’ to translate emotional information into safety behaviors, was proven to be a more optimized tool for construction practice than the Schutte scale, which centers on internal exploration for monitoring one's own state. This study holds significance in establishing a scholarly foundation for emotional safety diagnostic tools aimed at preventing human errors.
