Purpose: This study examined the impact of stair riser height on evacuation time for young children in daycare centers during fire emergencies. Although childcare facilities are frequently used by infants and toddlers with limited self-evacuation capabilities, current building regulations do not specify stair riser height criteria for daycare centers. Method: Evacuation characteristics were analyzed using Pathfinder simulation software under varying stair riser height conditions(140mm, 160mm, and 180mm). Age-specific movement characteristics were applied to children aged 5, 7, and 13 years. To enhance result reliability, each simulation scenario was repeated three times under identical conditions. Result: The results indicated that evacuation time increased as stair riser height increased, particularly for children under five years of age. A maximum evacuation time difference of approximately 3–4 seconds was observed between the 140mm and 180mm riser height conditions. This difference exceeded the observed simulation error range. Conclusion: The findings suggest that stair riser height is a significant architectural factor affecting evacuation efficiency for young children. Lower riser heights were associated with reduced evacuation times, indicating the importance of considering age-specific physical characteristics in stair design for daycare facilities.
