Abstract
Purpose: This study analyzes the limitations of existing safety guardrail installation methods for H-pile and sheet pile sections in excavation work and derives improvement requirements under irregular base-material conditions. Method: Based on field observations of approximately 500 construction sites and about 200 construction photographs, existing methods were classified into four types—direct-welding, welded-bracket, mechanical fastening, and ground-embedded—and compared by base-material response, connection and support methods, and major limitations. Result: Each type showed distinct limitations, such as welding and cutting work, additional member fabrication, restricted clamp workspace, and ground dependence. Notably, the non-welded mechanical fastening type was found to be limited in field application by workspace constraints. Three improvement requirements were derived, and an offset-type guardrail post installation device was conceptually reviewed. Conclusion: The findings provide basic data for improving guardrail installation in these sections and a basis for future structural performance and field applicability studies.
