Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the structural effects of construction site workers’ relational competence on safe and unsafe behaviors through the mediating role of risk sensitivity. Method: To this end, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 459 construction site workers. Relational competence was operationalized through communication competence and empathic competence, while risk sensitivity was conceptualized as a multidimensional construct consisting of sensitivity, insensitivity, avoidance, and risk-taking. Safe behavior and unsafe behavior were distinguished as compliance behaviors and violation or error-related behaviors, respectively. The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling after verifying reliability and validity through confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The results indicate that relational competence has a significant positive effect on risk sensitivity (β = .858, p < .01). In contrast, the direct effects of relational competence on safe and unsafe behaviors were not statistically significant (β = −.003, p = .970). Risk sensitivity showed a significant positive effect on safe behavior (β = .919) and a significant negative effect on unsafe behavior (β = −.730). Conclusion: These findings suggest that risk sensitivity fully mediates the relationship between relational competence and both safe and unsafe behaviors.
