Purpose: In high‑risk workplaces such as construction sites, unsafe behaviours often lead to serious or fatal accidents. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of emotional intelligence (EI) training on promoting safe behaviour among construction workers. While prior research emphasised technical interventions, few studies explored the role of psychological competencies such as EI in safety performance. Method: We developed a theoretical path model to assess relationships between EI elements and safety behaviour through motivation. A pre–post design was applied to survey responses collected from 231 construction workers. We used SPSS and AMOS to conduct path analysis and examine both direct and indirect effects. Result: Self‑awareness did not directly affect motivation but exerted a significant indirect effect via self‑regulation and social awareness. After training, participants’ emotion regulation, impulse control and causal reasoning improved by 36.75%, 37.53% and 38.32%, respectively. Conclusion: EI training increased psychological readiness and proactive safety engagement. These findings support the incorporation of EI development into safety education as a complementary strategy alongside traditional technical approaches. The study also highlights the need to assess the long‑term sustainability of these improvements and evaluate their applicability across diverse occupational settings.
